A Mythopoesis

A Mythopoesis takes a contemporary approach to myth-making and historical fiction, which echoes Mata Hari’s pleas found in the collection of letters published in 2016 after being in a family archive for over one hundred years. Through drawing and text, the book enters a space of mythologization, in which Mata Hari is juxtaposed with female figures from Greek Mythology.

“In A Mythopoesis Tatiana Tavoukjian Ferahian and Maria Petrides take deep dives into the myths and reality of Mata Hari. Maria listens deeply to her reverberations from various sources including quotes from the collection of Mata Hari’s letters. Tatiana’s drawings reimagine & re-present Mata Hari through a hybrid of fantastic, talelike drawings inspired by Greek mythology.” — Shelley Marlow (Writer)

“A Mythopoesis reimagines and remythologises the figure of the archetypal Belle Epoque femme-fatale and transgressor Mata Hari – herself a product of self-invention. The artist Tatiana Tavoukjian Ferahian and author Maria Petrides mine their sources from far and wide to render the heroine/anti-heroine alive in a delicious dialogue between images – where female sexuality and an appropriated Southeastern Asian exoticism rub shoulders with creatures straight out of the nightmares of Goya’s Caprichos and Fuseli’s Nightmare – and texts, of remarkable technical skill, which explore notions of orientalism and eroticism, myth and mystery.”  — Vazken Khatchig Davidian (Art Historian, University of Oxford)

“The adventures of a free-wheeling, feminist Mata Hari let loose on the world.” —  Rahma Khazam (Paris based art historian and critic)
